Responsible Rehoming Resources
STOP
Before seeking rehoming options, please visit our other public resources that can help you keep your pet. The DFW metroplex is very overpopulated with so many pets in need of a home. Rehoming can be very difficult emotionally on a pet. There is no better home than the one they are in.
-
There are many rehoming groups on Facebook based on location or breed for safe rehoming. These pages are moderated and can get you great success in finding a home, especially if you’re having a difficult time. You may also want to join and post on your local Nextdoor app!
-
We have a major overpopulation CRISIS in DFW! Giving away an unfixed dog can lead to unwanted, accidental, or unethical breeding. This leads to more unwanted and euthanized pets in our shelters. This can also ensure your pet does not suffer from infections like Pyometra in the future or get used for breeding. Affordable spay and neuter resources are located under our Public Resources section. Alternatively, we recommend requiring a signed contract between both parties requiring it to be done if it is not done prior to rehoming.
-
We recommend a $50-$300 rehoming fee to ensure the pet does not end up in the wrong hands. People with bad intentions or dog flippers often search for free pets online! A wonderful idea is to require a fee to be donated to your local animal rescue!
-
One example is listed below. This safely lines out an agreement between both parties to avoid any misunderstandings.
How to Rehome Responsibly
Owner Surrender Request Form
In some cases, we do accept owner surrendered animals into our program if we can find a suitable foster home. Please fill out our Owner Surrender form to request a transfer of ownership. Once submitted, we will network with our foster base to find a suitable foster home, and we will contact you if one is found! We are more likely to accept dogs if you are willing to foster them until they are adopted, all foster requirements and approval apply.

DPA New Digs

Through our innovative program, New Digs, we offer people who can no longer keep their pets the resources to responsibly find new loving homes. New Digs helps to keep pets out of shelters and gives prospective adopters the opportunity to learn about pets directly from their owners who know them best!
